Arles, France: The future of Ukraine is located in the European Union and the country must be a member as soon as possible, Deputy Head of the EU Commission said on Friday.
“Now it’s time for a strong message. It’s time to indicate that Ukrainian people are one of Euroans. We want it as soon as possible,” said Vice President of the Commission Maros Sefcovic, said that after the meeting of European European Minister Arles in the south of France.
The enthusiasm had grown for the UE UKRaine membership which was finally behind the Russian invasion among members of the European Parliament, after President Volodymyr Zelensky fiery in the European Parliament this week.
But the country still needs to go through the same membership process with other candidates, without a fast track route in prospects.
“The most important thing is to send a very strong political signal that we consider Ukraine. We see them as a future member country,” Sefkovic said.
In his video address from Kyiv to the European Union parliament on March 1, Zelensky requested “immediately” EU membership, said his country “struggled to survive”.
EU officials, while sympathizing, said there was no short path for membership and any accession process would be long.
European Minister Clement Beaune described supporting the prospect of the EU membership for Ukraine as “signals, perspectives that in any case will take several years”.
Sefcovic said the European Union, which had surprised several observers with unity and the power of his response to Russian attacks in Ukraine, itself changed in the days since President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion on February 24.
“Things that only change in a dramatic way so I think now is the time for brave steps and when Europe is thick until now, I am sure we will dare also on this matter,” added Sefcovic.
