Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso: a shot was heard on Sunday near President Burkina Faso after the army contradicted several barracks to demand the sacking of the country’s top military and more resources for fighting against militants.
Residents also reported that they saw a helicopter on the private residence of President Roch Marc Kabore in the capital Ouagadougou.
It followed the shot on the previous week in several army bases, encouraging concerns about other coups in a fluctuating West African country vulnerable to military takeover.
Meanwhile, the demonstrators protested the government’s handling of the threat of jihadists to burn the ruling party headquarters.
But the government quickly denied rumors about Putsch, and the list of demands presented by rebel forces did not mention trying to overthrow kabura, while emphasizing the need for a better anti-jihadist strategy.
“We want adequate resources for the battle” against Islamic extremists, a soldier from the Sangouze Lamizana base at Ouagadougou said in the voice recording received by AFP.
Unatisfied soldiers also want the top generals to be “replaced”, better care for injured troops and more support for the army family killed in battle, spokesman for the coaches added to anonymous recording.
Authorities declared overnight hours from 20:00 (2000 GMT) Sunday “until further notice” and the Ministry of Education said the school would be closed Monday and Tuesday crossing a poor landlocked country.
The riots came a little more than a week after 12 people, including a senior military officer, was arrested for being suspected of planning to “disrupt” Burkina institutions.
It also came a day after the police used tear gas to dissolve demonstrations, caught dozens.
Incident ‘Localized, Limited’
Residents in Gounhin Regency, where the Sangoule Lamizana base is located, reportedly sees the army shooting at the air and sealed the area around the barracks.
The shot was also heard at Baby Sy Barracks in the south of the capital, as well as at the air base near the airport, which was also surrounded by soldiers wearing Balaclava, said Saksises.
There are also shots at the base in the northern cities rich and OuahGouya, residents there told AFP, and cellular internet services were cut.
The government moves quickly to try to restore control.
“Information about social media will make people believe there is a military takeover,” said the alkassoum government spokesman Maiga in a statement.
“The government, admitting that there was a shot shot at the barracks, denying this information and called the public to remain calm.”
Defense Minister General Barthelemy Simple said on national TV that “there was no problematic Republican institution” by rebellion.
He added that there was a “incident” that was laoken, “limited” in several barracks “, and that he was investigating.
The police fired tear gas to break up a general meeting of around 100 people gathered in a square in the Central Ouagadougou to show support for the rebellion, AFP correspondent reported.
History of coup
Sangoule Lamizana Camp accommodated a military prison where General Gilbert Dente – a former right man to overthrow President Blaise Compaore – serve a period of 20 years for a coup attempt in 2015.
He was also tried for alleged role in the 1987 murder of the country’s revolutionary leader, Thomas Sankara, as long as Putsch carrying the powerful component.
Compaore, was overthrown by a popular rebellion in 2014, fled to Ivory Coast, and was being tried in absentia for the murder.
Anger at Toll Jihadist
The latest turbulence coincides with a jihadist rebellion that swept from the neighboring environment in 2015, befell the Burkina’s amazing and poorly equipped armed forces.
On November 27, dozens were injured when hundreds turned out to protest.
Among the soldiers who were arrested this month over the plot for “institutionalized institutions” were Lieutenant-Colonel Emmanuel Zoungrana, who had ordered anti-jihadist surgery in the former Western region that was beaten by Colony France.
In a statement, the economic community of West African countries (ecowas) said it was very concerned about the situation and declared its solidarity with Kabura, the government and its people.
