The United Nations: The spread of what Russia called Peacekeeping in East Ukraine is “bullshit” and Moscow’s recognition of separating areas as independently is part of the pretext for war, the United States said to the UN Security Council on the day Monday.
The consequences of Russian actions “will be terrible – throughout Ukraine, throughout Europe, and throughout the world,” US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said at the council’s emergency meeting of 15 members.
Tensions between Moscow and the high western capital after weeks after the US charges were deployed by Russia up to 150,000 soldiers near the Ukrainian border for invasion. Russia denied it wanted to attack Ukraine and accused the western hysteria.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday officially recognized two separating areas – the People’s Republic of Donetsk who proclaimed himself and the People’s Republic of Lugansk – as independent, opposed west warnings that such a step would become illegal and destroy peaceful negotiations.
“President Putin has ripped off the Minsk agreement to tear. We have been clear that we do not believe he will stop at that time,” said Thomas-Greenfield, referring to the 2014 and 2015 agreement which aims to end the conflict between the Russian-Supported Ukrainian and separatist soldiers East Ukraine.
Putin also on Monday ordered the spread of Russian forces to the Donbass region in East Ukraine “maintaining peace”.
“We remain open to diplomacy for diplomatic solutions, however, allowing new Bloodbath in Donbass is something we do not want to do,” United Nations Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the Security Council.
Ukraine called for the Security Council to meet after Russia’s recognition of two Breakaway regions on Monday. Eight board members, including the United States, Britain and France, supported Kyiv’s request.
It was the third Security Council meeting in Ukraine in a few weeks. The body had met dozens of times to discuss the Ukrainian crisis since Russia annexed the Krimea Ukrainian area in 2014. Cannot take any action because Russia is the power of Veto along with France, England, China and the United States.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres believes Russia has violated the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine with his decision to recognize East Ukraine as an independent entity, said a spokesman.
The head of UN political affairs Rosemary Dicaralo told the UN Security Council regretted the orders of Russia to spread troops to East Ukraine on the “Mission of Peace Guard” reported.
