Washington: CNN President Jeff Zucker suddenly resigned on Wednesday because he failed to reveal a romantic relationship with a colleague on the US cable television network.
“I certainly hope for my term here to end differently,” Zucker said in a message to network employees. “But it runs amazing. And I love every minute.”
Zucker, 56, said his resignation was effective soon.
As Head of the Cable Network since 2013, Zucker is one of the most powerful media executives in the United States and the frequent target of anger of former President Donald Trump.
In his message, Zucker said that as part of an investigation into the Anchor CNN, he “asked about consensual relations with my closest colleague, someone I had done for more than 20 years.”
“I admit that the relationship was evolved in recent years,” he said. “I was asked to reveal it when it began, but I didn’t. I was wrong.”
CNN identified colleagues as the Chief Marketing Officer Allison Gollust, who said he would remain on the network.
“Jeff and I have become a close friend and professional partner for more than 20 years,” Gollust said in a statement published by CNN.
“Recently, our relationship changed during Covid,” he said. “I regret that we did not reveal it at the right time.
“I’m very proud of my time in CNN and hope to continue the big work we do every day.”
Zucker and Gollust are both divorced, according to the New York Times.
Zucker joined CNN from NBC, where he served as President and Chief Executive Officer from the NBC Universal Television Group.
While in NBC, Zucker launched reality TV shows “The Apprentice” that skyrocketed Trump to Stardom.
Both of them fell after New York Real Estate Mogul entered politics and CNN became the favorite target of Diakyribes Trump against the media while in the White House.
In a statement published by CNN, Jason Kilar, CEO Warnermedia, the CNN parent company, said he would “announce a temporary leadership plan.”
“We thank Jeff for his contribution for the past 9 years,” said Kuch.
WarnerMedia is currently involved in talking mergers with Discovery Inc.
