The UN Chief Antonio Guterres told the Davos All-virtual forum on Monday that the world must vaccinate everyone against Covid-19 to ensure a way out of the pandemic.
Face-to-face meetings of political power players and companies in the Swiss Alps are online for the second year in a row due to a pandemic that shows no signs of intersection.
“The last two years have shown a simple but brutal truth – if we leave anyone behind, we leave everyone behind,” the UN Secretary General said.
“If we fail to vaccinate everyone, we bring up a new variant that spreads on the border and brings everyday life and the economy to the termination of grinding.”
Guterres said the international community needed to “face a pandemic with equity and justice.”
He noted that the world health organization launched the final autumn strategy to vaccinate 40 percent of the planet’s population at the end of 2021 and 70 percent in the middle of this year.
“We are not near these targets,” said Guterres to the World Economic Forum.
“The level of vaccination in high-income countries, embarrassing, seven times higher than African countries. We need vaccine equity, now,” he added.
Guterres said the pharmaceutical company must “stand in solidarity with developing countries by sharing licenses, knowledge and technology so that we can all find a way out of this pandemic.”
